I know this seems like a no brainer, but new pool owners happen everyday and this is pool 101 stuff that all pool owners need to be trained on. There are three reasons why you need to know how to vacuum your pool manually. First, you might not own an automatic pool cleaner. Which you NEED to purchase if you have a pool by the way. Secondly, there could be a major problem that can’t be solved with an automatic pool cleaner, like algae. Third, as with anything mechanical, your pool cleaner will eventually break and it could happen at a less than ideal time. So you need to be the backup.

What You’ll Need

A pool cleaning machine next to a hose.

Here’s How You Do It

1. Attach the vacuum head to the telescopic pole.

2. Attach the hose to the top of the vacuum head.

3. Place the vacuum head, pole, and hose all the way to the bottom of the pool so that the vacuum head is on the bottom.

4. Find your pools return jet, then with the pump and filter running take the other end of the hose and put it up against it. This will push all of the air out. Easy way to tell if all the air is out is when bubbles stop coming out from the vacuum head on the floor of the pool.

5. If your NOT using a vacuum plate, remove the basket inside the skimmer and bring the hose over and into the skimmer. Insert the hose into the suction hole at the bottom of the skimmer. If you move the hose out of the water make sure you block/cover it with your hand to prevent air getting back into the hose.

If you ARE using a vacuum plate, attach it to the end of the hose thats connected to the return jet, block the opening, and bring it over to the skimmer. Be sure to create a good seal or suction will be lost. This will create the suction from the vac head, through the hose, into the skimmer, and through the filter system.

If at anytime suction is lost, just repeat steps 4 and 5. When it comes to manually vacuuming your pool, patience is a virtue. If you try to speed vacuum you will just kick up the debris for it to settle back down later. Forcing you to vacuum again.
