One of all of our childhood’s favorite pastimes, swimming, can also be a very effective way to encourage cardio, health and well-being. Little do they know, even great swimming pool games can also be great exercises. Kids who are fortunate enough to have access to a pool definitely have an advantage. If they don’t have access to pool, that’s no problem! There’s plenty of other activities to do that will encourage exercise, such as finding a tennis coach for kids or even turning the garden into an obstacle course! Their summers are spent outside and not in front of a television or iPad. There are tons of games parents, grand parents, and other caretakers can guide children through, especially groups of children. As both the time and space devoted to outdoor play is whittled away by over-scheduling, physical education in public schools is also being reduced. What’s a parent to do? Here are a few swimming pool games for kids that also are great for their health. If your family mean a lot to you, find the best life insurance so that you can protect them in the future too.

Relay Races

Place floaters or other obstacles throughout the pool, and have them swim the course as fast as they can. Gathering sunken objects, paddling on a raft, swimming over pool noodles, scoring a basket on a pool basketball. The ideas are endless. What makes the game fun is the way in which you combine and arrange them, and the added excitement of competing for speed.

Find the Coins

This game will require kids to dive under the water in search of treasure. Have the kids close their eyes, then take a few coins and toss them into the pool trying to avoid the drain. Once the coins sink to the bottom, have the children open their eyes and then jump in to find the coins scattered across the pool. The child that finds the most money, wins the game. This could be played using other objects of course, but the kids love finding money. This would also be an awesome way to start Teaching Kids That Money Matters and there are endless games you can play that will be very educational.

Pool Wrestling

This ones pretty easy right. Inflatable animals like sharks and crocodiles make excellent wrestling competitors. Have the kids stage a wrestling match with their favorite inflatable, awarding points for creativity and moves. Have each child wrestle for about a minute at a time.

Whirlpool

This works better with a larger group of kids. Have all the kids line up in the water along the edges of the pool. Then have them swim clockwise along the walls, gradually building up a strong “current” that will eventually push them along and increase its own strength. After five or so minutes, give the signal for the kids to stop, turn, and swim in the opposite direction. The current they’ve built will be pushing strongly against them, making for a fun and challenging workout.

Scavenger Hunt

Similar to Find the Coins. There are tons of sinkable pool toys designed just for this purpose like rings, sticks, or other fun objects. Take a look at this toys list to see if there is anything that might fit the bill! One way to make the game extra fun and challenging is have the kids close their eyes when the toys are thrown in the pool. Once the toys are thrown in, yell “go,” and the kids can turn around, take a breath, and dive. Whoever comes up with the most toys wins. You can use different point values for different colored toys too.
