How to Clean Your Pool Accessories Before the Season Starts

Pool toys and floating lounges are a must have for summer fun. They provide extra entertainment for kids of all sizes, and an extra spot for moms and dads to relax. You invest a good deal of time, energy and money in keeping your pool water clean and fresh, so why take the chance of dirtying that with pool accessories that are full of bacteria. Giving your pool accessories a once over at the start of the season will ensure that the shock you just gave your swimming pool will stay effective.

Even if you cleaned your pool toys at the end of last season before putting them away, they should be inspected and cleaned again before throwing them inside of your pool again. Algae and bacteria thrive in the dark, and could have been growing on your pool tools all winter long. Just hosing them down to get the dust off is not sufficient, if you want a truly clean pool environment they should be washed down with cleaning agents first.
A solution of bleach and water will work best at killing any bacteria that is hiding on your pool toys. 16 ounces of household bleach per half gallon of water should be a sufficient concentration to get the toys clean. Use a soft scrub brush dipped inside of the bleach water to rub down the services, paying special attention to any seams. Then rinse the pool toy thoroughly with clean water before proclaiming it pool ready.
Foam pool accessories that are not protected are of special concern as mold can get inside of the porous material where you can’t see it. A foul smell is one way to tell the toy has been contaminated, or if parts of it have started to break away. In this case, you are better off to throw that toy away and replace it with another. To prevent such situations from occurring in the future, you may need to use a toxic mold test kit on a regular basis to find out if a particular place in your house is susceptible to mold growth.

How to Store Your Pool Toys

If you won’t be using your pool toys for a week or more it is important that you dry them off completely before putting them away. This is especially true for blow up toys as mold will love the small folds formed when you pack them away. Wiping them down with a bleach solution first will also help in warding off bacteria, or you could use pre-moistened anti-bacterial wipes found in super markets.
Don’t forget about your other pool accessories that go inside of the water such as hoses, vacuum heads and skimmers. Even automatic pool cleaners should be wiped down with bleach before use to ensure that they are not transferring germs into the pool even as you are working to keep it clean.
Pool toys and accessories add an extra level of pleasure to your backyard fun. Just make sure that they are not hindering your efforts at keeping the water crystal clear by cleaning them before your pool party season starts.
